This blog is about me and my music. My current focus is on learning piano using the Sudnow Method and guitar improvisation. I currently play guitar in a band that concentrates on playing the early rock and roll of the 50’s and 60’s. I also play guitar in a trio setting that focuses more on the jazzy side. Seemingly irrelevant posts on this blog reflect topics that are probably expressed in my music somewhere.

Soloing
Using a couple of different materials to help me improvise on guitar.....a very helpful book I used in the past as well as a book of cool riffs....one review of the riff book said that using the riff book with the major scale is a good idea and I’m beginning to see the value of that.

Chord Melody
Decided to go back to a tried method that has worked for me with regards to chord melody guitar: Robert Conti’s “Assembly Line” material. Today I worked on the various chord shapes for the dominant chords.
Would really like to be able to do a performance of songs where I can play the melody as well as improvise over my friend playing bass. Also, he could do some soloing as I play the chords.
Almost forgot to add that I’m working again out of Jamie Aebersold’s Book 1 for guitar. Just about finished with the major scales. Selling myself short in that before I even started again, I’m telling myself that the other scales and exercises will be too difficult.

Guitar, Piano.....Piano, Guitar
Regarding guitar, I think that I am getting somewhere and may even go further if It keep up with my current chord melody studies using my book.
Regarding piano, I really like the sounds, and I practiced some of that too today.
The problem remains. Which do I focus on, guitar or piano? I don’t think that I have time to continue with both. It’s a complex dilemma.
I like them both; I love the sound of solo piano more than the sound of guitar; I have more experience with the guitar and might get farther with the guitar than I would with the piano if I keep sticking to it....
Maybe trumpet!

Gig Night
Had a really good gig tonight with the band. It started this morning with a good practice session. Adding songs to our repertoire is keeping things from being monotonous. Added “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and I think it sounds really good.
Also continue to practice from the chord melody book.

Philly Philly
Nick Foles calls the play, “Philly Philly?” Coach Doug Pederson is seen here thinking. He agreed, and what a play! The Eagles get a touchdown going for it on fourth down.

Piano Guitar, and Eagles
Working on “AsTime Goes By” (arranged by David Sudnow in “The Sudnow Method”) on piano. Also working on Swing Guitar stuff in the Paul Howard book.
The more I hear nonmelodic Jazz I really don’t like it. It’s not for me. I like melody. That’s why I might like Charlie Christian on guitar rather than the bop players. Similarly, I like melodic sounds on the piano, rather than what I think are bop or bebop sounds. Every once in the while, I like dissonance, but just as a flavoring.
So tomorrow is the Super Bowl, and it would be just epic for me if The Philadelphia Eagles can beat the New England Patriots.
