The Sudnow Method

Happy New Year’s Eve’s Eve!
Restarted “The Sudnow Method” for piano. Started from scratch and it feels good. Yesterday was a combined birthday party for my daughters, and here are some pics:

Piano/Guitar

Tried to learn a version of a Beatles song for guitar and man was that difficult! Leaning towards the Sudnow piano method ... one solid year of it?

Piano / Guitar

Wondering what piano method to commit to this year?My online program? Two different method books? Sudnow?
For Christmas, I got a Laurence Juber CD of him playing Beatles songs as well as a book that teaches how to play them.

Get Back

A nice gig tonight with the band for some older folks. Was tempted to go back to jazz guitar but must get back to the piano!
From tonight’s gig:

Gigs

Played a gig last night and one today. Went well. Hate my electric guitar. Sounds tinny. Gigs this week will be Wednesday and Friday. Have to get back to my piano program.

Philadelphia Eagles played and won a great game today; the terrible news is that our quarterback Carson Wentz was hurt. He seems like a great guy and his Christianity is inspirational.

Bass Clef

Making progress with piano. Working on reading music; that bass clef takes some getting used to for me. Learning technique also. The piano program I’m working through is still on the easy side for me, but that’s ok. Taking it slow. Wondering when fingerings will be covered - I’m very awkward in that department!

“Wishing”

Up to Book One, Unit Two in the piano program. Then decided to make a recording. I wrote it about 30 years ago and added some stuff to it tonight. Here it is, and it’s called “Wishing.”

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Still in Book 1, Unit 1 in the piano program. At the point now where I’ll have to be at the piano while playing the video lesson.
Still struggling to stay with healthy habits. Triglycerides are way too high and may have prediabetes. Working to get more healthy. Enjoying the thought provoking book in the post below.

Progressing

Finished the beginning section of the piano program, and now I’m in the first lesson of the regular program. Progressing. Must start somewhere! I think it’s better (for me) to start in these easier places than to dive into piano territory where I’m not ready. In looking ahead to where I’m going in this program, I can see that it will definitely take me into more difficult territory.
Played a “Breakfast With Santa” event at the Church yesterday that went well. Heading up is a gig for Church volunteers on Saturday and a gig for needy kids on Sunday.

Three Amigos

Played a free Christmas show for some needy kids with two members of the band. This is the 4th year we’ve been doing it:

Continue

Continue to move slowly but surely with the piano program. Continue to be make more healthy.

Started

Started the new piano course of study ... getting some fundamentals ... haven’t sat at piano with this stuff yet but it’ll happen.
Again, have been trying to be more healthy with diet, exercise, and self care.
Two Christmas gigs this weekend: one for the Make a Wish folks (three of us will play, and I’ll debut my Gibson acoustic in public), and a Breakfast with Santa event at the Church.

Sunday

Well, the Eagles are now 10 - 1.
Went back and forth to the city a number of times starting Thanksgiving Eve to help with transportation for the holiday.
Was all set to start piano stuff today, but there were issues/updates needed to download on my computer. I think I’m gonna do this piano stuff.
Going to go back to the basics that I never really had ingrained: reading music as well as utilizing correct technique. And using online learning rather than self learning. Would be really nice to spend one hour a day on piano and one hour a day on exercising.

Thanksgiving Eve, 2017

Yea so thinking of one more piano try with one more course of study. But am I too old? Am I really going to stick with it?

Junk (Third Version)

I thought Version 2 had too much reverb on some guitars. So here’s Version 3:

Junk

Had a nice time tonight recording a version of Paul McCartney’s song “Junk.” There are three vocal parts and I had to record them each separately because I couldn’t hit the correct notes in one take! This is such a beautiful McCartney melody. Here it is:

Gig

Played a fun gig today, and actually made some cash from it. My electric guitar just sounds so thin.....
During the gig, something happened that never happened to me before: while singing, my voice just stopped cooperating in a weird way. Probably just strained it a bit.

Improvisation

Tried some Improvisation on piano using a book of licks I had. Tried to improvise a bit to “Oh Christmas Tree.” Jury is out.
Friend to lend me what may be a beautiful Fender Telecaster Deluxe for some gigs.

Improvisation

Just some thoughts....with regards to Improvisation at the piano....maybe I can use a bit of what was taught in a guitar course.....improvise using phrases, not just scales....and I have a book of something similar using piano runs.......hmmmmmm........using the “language” and not just scales!

Miscellaneous

- Trying to adapt more healthy habits, but I need to try harder.
- Had some time at the piano today. Practiced a couple of songs. But bugged with trying Improvisation. Not clicking. Hands not cooperating. Working on scale patterns is kind of getting there, but when I get to trying to use them in the context of a song, I get all flustered.
- Son interested in getting electronic drums for Christmas. He recently jammed with an indie band and it sounds like he had a great time. It sounds like they did some improvising.
- Still dreaming of someday translating the sounds in my head onto the piano.

Reorganizing

Played a good gig for a Church get together yesterday. But hauling around gear for free gigs  is getting very old for me.
Got into sone fingerpicking guitar recently. I think, though, that I want to stick to the guitar as being fun and expressive rather than “something to learn.”
Thinking of going back to Susman style methodology of songs and putting piano Improvisation on hold.

What Child is This

Started working on “What Child is This,” and also continued to work on Improvisation stuff in the Caruso.

2017 - 2018 Plan

Ok so I think I have some really good tools and ideas to help me achieve some piano goals for the year.

GOALS FOR THIS YEAR REGARDING PIANO

1. The ability to play songs as well as improvise.

Practice Structure:

A) Contunue to learn songs using Bill Susman’s chord building strategies. Maybe a couple of measures a day for 10 minutes. Continue to review old songs maybe about 10 minutes a day.

B) Continue to work on memorizing correct  fingerings / improvisational material from the Caruso book at least 15 minutes a day.

Piano

Found out that the secret to learning piano is hard work. Continue to play “Oh Christmas Tree,” but also trying to incorporate some of the ideas in the Caruso book. Memorizing memorizing memorizing.
Sometimes difficult to balance fun with learning.
Started to read the book “Free Play” which I never did complete before.

Cool Day

- Had band practice today for our Christmas gigs.
- Was ready to get into finger style guitar so I pulled out those book; can’t find the accompanying CD’s; them something cool happened....
- Ended up sitting at the piano (the instrument I was close to stop playing) and not only did I finish “Oh Christmas Tree,” but I also added a little improvisation to it. That is basically a really big desire of mine: to play a song and improvise over its chords. Figured I’m going to continue to use Susman’s method of forming chords, but I’d like to also use Caruso’s book to learn more about improvisation. Not going to focus on making arrangements with big chord forms and changes. Going to stay with the basic open chord formula for now and not playing a lot of changes.
- Here’s how it sounded today ... now there’s a whole lot of mistakes, and the Improvisation is elementary at best, but I like where this is going:

Miscellaneous

- Worked a little on the Christmas song (piano). Losing patience.
- Might try some blues acoustic guitar picking.
- Bob Dylan.

Music Book

Up to page 36 in the “How to Play Piano Desipe...” book (chapter 6). Looks like what is coming up is the good ole’ inversions that have been so difficult for me.
Played “Yesterday” on the piano. Nice, and I still have not ruled out the Sudnow Method. Just putting it on hold for now. I just have limited success memorizing songs.

Dear Prudence

Here’s me and my most recent guitar playing the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” :

Hello Josephine

Rehearsed with some guys tonight in order to play music at a Catholic Mass this Saturday night. When we were done, the sax player said something about doing a Fats Domino song, since Fats Domino recently died. Well we ended up doing some Fats Domino stuff, and, well, it turned out for me to be one of the most fun times I’ve had playing music in a long time! Thanks Mr. Domino, and may you Rest In Peace. One of my favorite songs of all time is “Lady Madonna” by the Beatles, and I don’t think that song would have been written if it wasn’t for the influence of Fats Domino.
Anyway, here’s a rendition of us doing Fats Domino’s “Hello Josephine” tonight. Our guy on bass knew the song, and I’m not sure I’ve heard it before. I kind of like that this was a tune I wasn’t too familiar with. The lineup:
The lead singer also plays bass. There’s a sax player, a rhythm guitar player, and I’m on percussion. When I got home, I added a track of me doing a background vocal. Here it is:

Gibson

My newly acquired Gibson J45:

New Way

Couple of interesting things going on.

I think I’m going to try the book:,“How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons” (What Music is and How to Make it At Home), by Ward Cannel and Fred Marx. I’ve had it for years, and never went through it well.

Tonight I’ll be trading in my Gibson Les Paul Studio for a Gibson acoustic plus cash on my end. I would like to have fun with music and do so on an acoustic guitar. Maybe too much of my time with music at home is not having fun but rather tedious, and maybe a nice acoustic guitar might help keep things fun.

The Bucket List

Had some drink tonight and watched “The Bucket List.” Loved it. It was like The Dead Poet’s Society for people my age..... When I was younger, The Dead Poet’s Society got to me .... as did The Bucket List now. Always wanted to play music in the subway at Christmas time.

Guitar

An interesting night of guitar work. Worked on a jazzy version of “What Child is This.” Discovered that using patterns plus my ear yielded the best results in improvising.

Piano

I just keep going with the piano and mostly the Sudnow Method. It takes work, and for me the challenge is to just stay in it for the long haul and just trust the Method.
Just doing the Sudnow Method requires you to actually spend time at the piano, rather than watching videos, reading, or doing other things that take away from the task and hand.
Continue to work on “Yesterday” and “Over the Rainbow.”
Giving some thought to getting an acoustic piano!

The Zone

I played the piano tonight and I went into “the zone.” A place where self-criticism of my play quiets down, where I just seem to be kind of immersed in what I’m doing just for the sake of doing it. Just played “Yesterday” over and over ... never mastering it, yet immersed in it. I even added a little bit into it that was a reference to “Strawberry Fields Forever” (my favorite song).
Constructive criticism: focus more on keeping a regular beat. On time. Go for quality.

Also started a different piano program too tonight and will see where that might lead me while I work on perfecting “Yesterday.”

Played a little guitar also, trying to work on the five Improvisation shapes and relate them to a major key. Will probably try to do a bit more Improvisation during Christmas shows this year. Speaking of which, band practice for the Christmas season starts tomorrow.

Gypsy

Yea so tonight I took out a couple of instructional Gypsy Jazz guitar books. I guess I get bored with an instrument, a genre, or a method.
As with any genre, I’m not really interested in playing in fast tempos. like the mid tempo, or even the slower tempo stuff.

The Band!

Gig Night

Our band played tonight for a community of older folks. It’s nice to see them actually enjoying it and singing along. I think our band wasn’t on our “A” game, but I think that overall we did well. May be missing some, but I sang lead on “Hello, Mary Lou,” “What a Wonderful World,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and “All Shook Up.” Here’s a pic of your’s truly singing “What a Wonderful World.”

Shifting Winds

Recently, thought of gettting back into Gypsy Jazz guitar. Also, thought of taking a course in Blues-Jazz guitar that seemed to possibly focus on the Gypsy guitar style. Thought of even getting a Gypsy guitar. Tempted a bit to trade my guitar for a different guitar. Rejoined a Gypsy jazz band.

But I didn’t do any of the above, and will not.  I kind of backed out of the Gypsy band and basically suggested I’ll join if we do more of electric swing jazz band rather than acoustic.

Played at the piano a bit, and that seems to still be what I should focus on.

Playing a gig for an older folks’ community tomorrow night.

No Making Music Today

Not in the mood to make music today...

"Want to Believe"

My friend worked on my song and he did a great job with it!  Wondering what to use, how to use it, try lyrics, etc.
Was tempted to take a jazz / blues guitar course that may focus on Gypsy Guitar but I think I'll pass.
Worked a little on piano. As odd as this may sound, playing "Yesterday" which I thought might be difficult, was kind of relaxing even though I definitely don't have it at a performance level. Continue to work (slowly) on "Over the Rainbow."

"Want to Believe"

Sent my friend the chord structure for the song. Maybe he'll help with it:

"Want to Believe"

Made what I think is a pretty good recording of my song, with a new section. Bad day: the Vegas shooting, and the news that Tom Petty is having bad health issues. First, news came that he had a heart attack. Then the news said he died. Now, the news says that he's alive. Would be beautiful if he can stay with us! Prayers up!

Sunday, October 1, 2017

"Want to Believe"

Tried playing my Les Paul to see if it would do anything for me; didn't work.

Piano:
Continue to play "Yesterday." I started working, I believe yesterday, on "Over the Rainbow."

A friend intrigued me regarding his suggestions that I try writing a song. So I did it. It's called, "Want to Believe." The title is inspired by his faith in Christ and how is like to have that faith. The song has no lyrics, and I'm not sure if it will. It's not bad for a first attempt at songwriting in awhile.

Philadelphia Eagles win and their record is now 3 - 1.

"Yesterday"

Finished learning the song. But timing and smoothness of playing need to be worked on. (A friend has a Gibson acoustic guitar and we may work out a deal for me to have it).

Friday, September 29, 2017

Piano

Still working on "Yesterday." I'm still liking it, though, of course, I've had thoughts of focusing back on guitar. Noticing that it might take me about a week or so ro learn this song. That's encouraging! Learning one tune per week can be quite cool; however, I realize it's not going to actually pan out that way. If tunes pile up in my repertoire, that would mean there has to be more and more time spent reviewing them and not confusing their parts.

Yesterday

Just a really good piano day. Takin' it slow, almost have the verse in Yesterday done. Memorizing a song may be difficult, but it really helps in maintaining a nice tempo. Actually tried a little improvising with two left hand chord notes and it sounded ok for where I'm at now!  Really have to take care of my health better.

Piano Wins

Well I went to guitar today and played "Yesterday," chord melody style. Here it is:

https://youtu.be/N7TfABfvUto

Then later on, I continued to work on it on piano, using the Sudnow Method. Well I didn't even finish the verse, it's very choppy, but.......I like it better than the guitar version.

Perhaps I just like the sound of the piano over the sound of the guitar; combine that with the great chord voicings in the Sudnow Method, and perhaps that it explains it.

But I'm glad I tried the guitar experiment. Can always revisit it. But for now, I'd like to stick to my song list, the Sudnow Method, and the piano.

On a side note, my favorite football team (the Philadelphia Eagles) beat the New York Giants with an unbelievable 61 yard field goal with one second left on the clock!

Saturday, September 23, 2017

Piano wins

Was tempted to go to chord melody guitar, but the piano won. Continue to work on "Yesterday," Sudnow style, on the piano. Played at Church tonight.

Sudnow / Yesterday / Day 1

Decided to go back to what was fun. Back to The Sudnow Method. Started working on the song "Yesterday." I like it. Wouldn't it be cool to learn and memorize all the songs I listed in the post below?

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Songs

Here's my current list of songs that would be cool to play on the piano:

When I Fall in Love / I've Got a Crush on You / Misty / Over the Rainbow / If / Yesterday / I Will / Blacckbird / Something / In My Life / Someone to Watch Over Me / And So it Goes / Georgia / My Funny Valentine / My Heart Will Go On / Godfather Theme / When You Wish Upon a Star; A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes; You Are the Sunshine of My Life / Unforgettable / Can You Feel the Love Tonight / All My Lovin / Just the Way You Are / The Long and Winding Road / Polla Dots and Moonbeams / Somewhere / Till There Was You / Unchained Melody / What a Wonderful World / I'll Be There / Never My Love / God Only Knows / My Cherie Amour / Goodnight / Blue Eyes / Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me / I've Loved These Days / She's Got a Way / New York State of Mind / If I Only Had the Words to Tell You / If I Fell / It Never Entered My Mind (George Shearing version) / Here, There, and Everywhere / I Loved You Porgy / Willow Weep For Me / Danny Boy / Witchita Lineman / Send in the Clowns / Moon River / As Time Goes By / Autumn Leaves / What Child is This / Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire / I'll Be Home For Christmas / Bridge Over Troubled Water / Music from the "Rocky" movie soundtrack / She's Leaving Home / White Christmas

New Change

I think I'm also going back to learn chord melody on guitar using what looks like a pretty cool resource I have had.
To learn lead guitar, I looking to go back to Robert Conti's material.
I have a list of songs that I'd like to learn how to play solo piano. I think I'm just going to learn how to play one at a time, using the Sudnow Method.

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Piano

Continue to make some progress learning chords in the Caruso book. Had an insight about where an open chord begins on the right hand: 4 half steps above the root except for the minor chord which is 3 steps above the root.

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Slow Start

Started getting into the section in chord voicing in the Caruso book. Slow start, but that's ok.

Monday, September 18, 2017

A New Change in Record Time

Trying to not make things more complicated than they need to. Major goal is to play songs and be able to improvise around the changes. I'm changing methods again. Got into this book awhile ago then stopped. I'm going to get into it again. It's called "Piano Improvisation: A Powerful Practical System," and its by by Frank Caruso and Karl Mollison.
I'm going to jump right to the chord voicings chapter.

Susman

Well I changed my mind again. I'm going to go back to the Bill Susman material. I just don't know if I have it in me to go through all of the material I had hoped to with other stuff.
Was tempted to go back to the Sudnow Method to at least learn a number of songs that I listed. But again, I'm not sure about memorizing and there's so many variations of chords that are possible that I'm not sure I can internalize all of that. Dang it, I still may go back to it.
But for now, I want to make things no more complicated than they need to be. Susman's stuff seems to be a good compromise of offering sophisticated sounds that are not extremely complex.

Getting Ready

Listened to the first three Tim Buckley albums today: Impressive; some beautiful stuff, some jazz, some poetry.
Will be playing a charity gig tomorrow with the band. Getting ready to start yet another "piano journey of me."

Stop the Presses

Yes, I will still be focusing my musical learning back on to the piano. But I'm using selections in a few books authored by Mark Harrison. Looking forward to it. I want to give this a try, but I can just hear the negative criticisms getting ready. Will try to plough through them, even if they are there. Going to start this weekend.
Charity gig coming up this Saturday.
Had some radio music on today. Listened  to some newer music this evening on the radio on apparently one of those radio stations that isn't a very popular, or mainstream one. The music was quite nice....was in a band format and melodic. Listened to some jazz too, which may have been on a different station. I just cannot seem to get into some modern jazz. (By modern jazz, I mean any stuff that might be described as bop, bebop, or similar titles). Rarely does that stuff talk to me.
I remain a sucker for a melody, whether it be in the body of a song, or an improvisation. Some stuff to me in jazz sounds like just notes. To each his or her own.

My Wife and Daughters

Piano

Looks like it's time to switch gears and get back seriously into the instrument whose sounds to me are really beautiful: the piano.

Thought of using a new method, but concluded that it's not for me now. Thought of using the Sudnow Method, but I'm not sure that I want to use so many different versions of one chord. Thought of using another method but it seems too demanding.
So to cut to the chase: Going back to the Bill Susman material. Seems appropriately challenging. Might challenge myself to memorize songs or at least memorize chords as I learn songs! I think memorizing chords is crucial to learning....and memorizing songs may help facilitate my learning of getting around the keyboard.

Would be really great to be patient with this, commit to this, and perhaps down the line implement ideas from the piano improvisation book I have...

However, my experience tells me that when I eventually become frustrated, bored, or both, I switch focus to a different musical instrument (guitar vs. piano). Wouldn't it be great to commit to a long term project?

Piano Les Paul

Into book one of a different piano system. Trying a more basic approach. Didn't play piano today; just reading some stuff in the book. Started the book before, but restarted today. It's approximately a 6 book series. Trying to figure out what to do with piano playing.
At band rehearsal yesterday I played my Gibson Les Paul Studio into a Fender amp. (Usually at rehearsal I play a friend's Gibson SG into a very limited amp). Man, my guitar sounded really nice yesterday! Having second thoughts about trying to sell it in order to fund the purchase of an acoustic. Listened to some nice classical guitar today. Trying to figure out what to do with guitar playing.

Get into piano? Stalled with guitar -
Sudnow Method? A newer downloaded method? Stalled with it all. Band rehearsal tomorrow fior a charity gig scheduled for next week.

Robert Conti

Liking my transition to the Conti products. Maybe I should spend some time on "The Jazz Lines" while working up a new chord melody songs (using "The Assembly Line").

Robert Conti

Going in a different direction.....back to Robert Conti's jazz guitar materials.....love his approach. I had one of his products ("The Jazz Lines") that I'm revisiting. This time, I'm watching the DVD.
His book, "The Assembly Line," which taught chord melody, was one of the best music learning books I've had (and I've had many!). I'm thinking of revisiting his "The Formula!" book also to help with chord melody arranging.

Youngest Daughter and Me

Learning to Play a Musical Instrument

I go in cycles. I think I'm now in the piano mode. I hear that the ideal way to learn is to:
Memorize
Everything.
Now that's intimidating to me because I doubt my ability to do that.

So what am I to do on piano? The Sudnow Method? Tempting. The Play Like Me program? Tempting. Or perhaps the Piano For All program.

But whatever I do piano-wise, I have to be be committed, persistent, and dedicated.

Music Learning

I used to try to learn songs on the piano by going right to playing the songs, taking little to no time to get the chord names into my brain outside of what was necessary to play the songs. The result was that I could play songs that sounded quite nice. The drawback was that if I didn't play the songs regularly, I forgot them.

I'm wondering about that as I think of learning chord melody on the guitar. I bet I could memorize some nice stuff, but am I really learning anything other than how to play a particular song?

I suppose if I learn to play a ton of songs, eventually it will get easier and faster to play other songs. But the problem is that my brain simply cannot keep in my muscle memory more than about two songs at any given time. So I learn two, and I have to keep on repeating them to keep them in my memory, and as I try to learn another song, and another, things get very time consuming (keeping the older songs in memory while adding new songs).

So I brought this up to my online jazz teacher who got back to me that he'll respond with his answer soon when he has a live Q & A.

I'm wondering if the answer is to learn chords (on piano or guitar) in isolation as well as in the context of learning songs?

Piano Guitar

Yea I was tempted to go back to the Sudnow Piano Method. Then I was actually a bit inspired to go back to guitar by (believe it or not) watching some of my videos. Tempted to learn chord melody guitar using a different method. Liking Charlie Christian swing guitar. Yes, all over the place!

Brain

Two muscles ...the part that's in charge of fight, flight, freeze...... other part in charge of problem solving and other things.....abused/neglected kids have the one in charge of fight, flight or freeze overworked and too ready to use.....the other muscle doesn't get practiced enough.....therefore it's not used......abused and neglected kids need those other skills but their brains don't have the connections needed on that weaker muscle.
Kids need attentiveness....if not received then it further prevents that other part of the brain from developing. Implications: teach skills while being attentive

Drawing Board

Went ahead of myself in my Jazz guitar lessons and tried to learn chord melody. Perhaps I have just follow the lessons In The Correct Order.
