Learning that just knowing the five guitar shape positions is not the silver bullet method of improvising; but that's ok because in learning them I've made a huge leap in my improvisation skills. The key, to me, is cool sounding GUITAR LINES, not just hitting notes in the shapes. More work needed to really get those shapes in my memory. I think it will also be cool to learn leads from chord shapes, a method that Charlie Christian utilized.
